Roughly 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say early analysis suggest the substance was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any harm in connection with the event," they added.
Local authorities announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for information.
A high-ranking political figure said the vandalism rendered him speechless and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
