Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.

Flight Disruptions

The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.

Smuggling Techniques

When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
